Handdyed yarn from (G)uld. presented by Scandinavian Knit

It has been snowing to night. Somewhere in the Danish countryside a clothesline looked like this in the morning. It means that Louise Schelde Jensen and Anne Støvlebæk Kjær, the women behind (G)-uld, was doing their magic yesterday:

Hand dyeing alpaca wool.

I have been following the project on the side for some time. Originally I have a an education in textile printing, and when I worked at the Waldorf school I did some hand dyeing. It was amazing. And so amazing to see how the children was drawn to the hand dyed yarn. Kids knows where the magic happens.

Back to (G)-uld – Uld is the danish word for Wool and Guld is Gold. A perfect name for the amazing project.

These women believe that in the 21st century we need unique elements – and the craftsmanship behind is worth the wait, and worth, if I may add, the extra price.

(G)-uld use natural materials that do not harm nature, and which is as gentle to the yarn as possible. The yarn is stained with alum and tartar which are minerals that are found in nature. As a color material we mainly use plants that grow in the Danish countryside. In addition to these, we use imported items such as Indigo and Cochineal.

(G)-uld has there kind of yarn: The soft lambswool from the second cut, is produced by a Scottish spinners. Wool production from Britain has a long history and many spinners are known for making great yarn at reasonable prices. They have taken an active choice to go abroad in relation to this yarn – a selected based on quality and price.

The alpaca is a beautiful 3-thread yarn made from wool from South American highlands, and this particular yarn, is chosen because of its amazing softness, heat capacity, and not least the high demand from mothers and grandmothers.
The worsted is a highly durable, glossy 2-ply yarn, which can be used for embroidery, weaving and sewing. The yarn is from Sweden, and is chosen because it leaves the color incredibly beautiful.

There is much more to know about (G)-uld so follow them on Instagram, Facebook and on the web. And a waring: You’ll fall in love!
