“How can you tell if a piece of textile is handmade?”<\/span><\/p>\n

That is something I often hear. Well, I have seen a lot of textiles and I know a lot of\u00a0textile technique, so\u00a0by now I know what to look for:<\/span><\/p>\n

The devil in the details<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

1. The\u00a0selvedge or the\u00a0selvage –\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0self-finished\u00a0edge of\u00a0fabric.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n


\n<\/a>\"Handmade<\/a>Handwoven:<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

The selvage is generally the same thickness as the rest of the cloth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Often a bit uneven.<\/span><\/p>\n

On this tea towel you see the pattern continues in the selvage, but it’s\u00a0uneven and you can even see a small loose tread.<\/span><\/p>\n

Industrial woven:<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The selvage is often made thicker with a binding thread and\u00a0t<\/span>he selvage will be even.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Irregularities in the fabric<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In this fabric you see the selvage and some vertical lines in the fabrics. It shows that the\u00a0tensioning of the loom has been uneven.<\/span><\/p>\n

You wouldn’t see this in an industrial fabric.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. The finish<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Here on the linen table cloth\u00a0it’s by hand. Small and even stitches. Clearly sewn by hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Strap<\/a>Is there a strap?<\/span>Is it sewn by hand?<\/span><\/p>\n

Here it’s clearly hand sewn.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

4. Fibers<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes the fibre helps me\u00a0classify age and if the textile is handmade. Old and\u00a0well preserved cotton and linen is often in a high\u00a0quality – it’s just in my eyes by know.<\/span><\/p>\n

To check if it’s linen or cotton you can test it with the back of you hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If it’s linen<\/strong><\/em> it will feel cold.<\/span><\/p>\n

If it’s cotton<\/em><\/strong> it will feel cold at first but shortly it will feels warmer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The nerdy detail:<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Do you know you the towels for cleaning glass and crystal?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

They are fine woven towels, made from smooth, hard-twisted cotton or linen yarns which leaves\u00a0little or no lint.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
